Supporting language for literacy and life

Welcome to SpeakWrite, established in 2017 by Debbie Willshaw with the aim of bridging the gap between local NHS Speech and language Therapy and school based support. Bringing over 20 years experience of supporting SEN learners in both mainstream and specialist settings, Debbie has a real passion for nurturing every child's potential and helping others to create communication opportunities for everyone.

This journey began with a passion

Inspired by a degree in Psycholinguistics and extensive work with SEN children in mainstream and specialist primary schools, Debbie recognised the increasing need for teacher training and inclusive support for children with speech, language, and communication (SLC) difficulties. After pursuing a Post Graduate Diploma in Language and Communication Impairment in Children, alongside specialist training in Colourful Semantics, Makaton, Cues Articulation, Word Aware, TEACCH, TEFL, Talk Boost, Stoke Speaks Out Staged Pathway, and Autism Awareness, SpeakWrite was established to provide targeted interventions, upskill staff, and offer non-diagnostic assessments, ensuring no child is left behind.

A nurturing approach, tailored to every child

At SpeakWrite, our approach is founded on genuine care and a nurture. We believe that building trust is paramount, allowing children to feel safe and confident as they develop their communication skills. By basing interventions around each child's unique interests and needs, we deliver a truly personalised and holistic service that respects their individuality and fosters their growth. This tailored support ensures effective, meaningful progress.

Bridging the gap in communication support

We understand the challenges faced by schools and families: lengthy NHS waiting times, limited resources for reinforcement at school or home and increasing numbers of children who, despite not meeting eligibility criteria, could greatly benefit from additional speech and language support. Statistics consistently show the profound impact of a lack of early intervention on academic outcomes, future career prospects, GCSE results and social relationships can all be impacted if speech and language difficulties are not identified early enough to receive crucial intervention and support. SpeakWrite addresses these critical issues by increasing awareness of SLC difficulties, promoting communication-friendly environments, and empowering staff with essential training to make a real, lasting difference.

"Debbie has a fantastic ability to engage and empower children in their own individual learning journeys"
